Rear exhaust silencer dropped down - all very rusty by Ed3 (Page 1 of 2)

Ed3
While my CDTi 06 plate was parked on the driveway my rear exhaust silence had dropped right down. Because the bottom of the big bracket rusted away totally. The silencer is rusted through behind the bracket. The car is 160k+ and one owner before me used it as a workhorse in a very wet location. So that car is not worth getting expensive parts. Any suggestions on my best options?
Does anyone know, if I fitted a universal back box what would be the minimum acceptable diameter for the inlet to the back box. The ones on ebay seem like 2 inches which is very small. Or is it best to look for a cheap aftermarket system?

Have a chat with Arctic, I believe he has some excellent condition used back boxes that wouldn't cost a fortune

Hi Dave.
I did one got fitted to my tourer, and the other was given to a local chap who likes to drive up and down curbs a lot, which damages the cars drop links, rips off wheel arches and brake and abs sensors as well as back boxes,

I have telephoned many breakers and they have not seen a Rover 75 in years. I use an angle grinder in my driveway and so is this petrol back box on my CDTi be a good way to go? Would I try and cut to slot together? or buy a link section?

Or could I make this fit? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/365551118171
Thanks

Thanks I have ordered the V6 new one for £57 delivered. Quite pleased with that price. I am now going to work out if I can bodge a bracket that holds it. As the bottom of the bracket disappeared due to rust

I am waiting delivery of the v6 back box and getting the car ready. How easy is it to angle grind a cut into the old CDTi exhaust pipe. Do I need to get the old exhaust off? Or can I do as I was planning to cut while the exhaust is on the car? thanks.

Thanks that is very helpful. Do we measure to slide the CDTi pipe into the V6 silencer? Or cut to use a connector?

ED if it going to slide in then measure for that, but always best to allow a bit more for the first cut then you can always take some off, it makes it hard if you cut short.

I put a V6 back box on my tourer when i had it, a nice gift from Stocktake (Dave) thank you,
Joined it with a long clamp.

Thanks Steve. I have all the screw etc out of the rear bumper (5 screws top, 2 underneath, one each side/wheel arch) and Haynes says lift and pull out. But as very normal with plastic trim etc it does not want to budge and concerned about breaking it.

Any tips on dislodging the rear bumper once all screws are out?

UPDATE - The ends of the bumper by the wheel arch eventually came out by pulling up and out and then worked my way around.

Can I just double check that a rusted bottom body side panel below the rear wings either side is not structural and needs welding? - The panel that is found below the side vents behind the rear bumper and that links with the rear bumper and wheel arch side screws. thanks

Thanks Steve.
In your link here below photos 9 to 12 show you holding sections of the side of the rear bumper either side. It is the metal panel that is behind the bumper where you hands are. ON the worst side I have lost 6" x 14" to rust which I can easily bodge with supports and filler if no welding is needed.
The panel on both sides simply hangs down and not connected to anything apart from the wheel arch liner to bumper screw. Fist impression is that is a panel that is not needed and could be cut out if so wished. But I thought I had better cut because it is within 12 inches of the floor of the boot which is structural.

Hi Ed.
Having now seen the photos personally i would just tidy up the edges, then maybe later weld or pop rivet a new panel in if that is required but i doubt it is.

Thanks Mick and Steve, The v6 back box I ordered I thought was in he UK but now it seems to be stuck in Poland and will be slow arriving. I will be using the good weather we have with the car stuck up on axle stands to paint the underside with black Hammerite. Which is my preferred simple way of dealing with rust. This Rover 75 is an 06 reg but lived it's first 10 years in a wet place and it show underneath. I use waxoyl on some parts which are not too rusty but cautious that rust is treated, because as we are aware some rusts rots away underneath the waxyol. I notice as photos when he back wheel comes off, there is lots of access to cut the CDTi exhaust pipe to fit a V6 back box

My aftermarket V6 rear box has just arrived and the pipe end is 60mm while the present diesel aftermarket pipe is 60mm. Do I buy a 60mm to 60mm connector? Or a bigger size to fit over 60mm?
Thanks
