Windscreen wipers on full when car parked and locked by Ed3 (Page 3 of 3)

Thanks Steve, Success for last 24 hours so far with stopping the electrics doing as they wish. I left things on top of the wipers for 24+ hours so I would know if they move. and good news no movement of wipers or other issues for 24 hours.

The routine seems to be to stop the supply of rain water to electrics while using a contact spray inside the immobiliser plug connections and unplug and plug back in a number of times with contact cleaner spray as a way to clean without damaging the contacts.

I tend to do the work on the Rover just a little each day. With 3 out of 4 drains working, to stop rain water inside the car I have plugged the drivers side drain at the sunroof using flexible universal windscreen washer pipe and now I will see if I can get a modified pipe end that I bought from DMGRS onto the drain pipe above the immobiliser. Another day after that I will peel back the wheel arch liner and see how the mod pipe end fits into the rubber outlet.

Steve's photos show the light switch well. Water can run down the wires and into the connector, and you won't always see it. As he said, disconnect the main connector (using the white bar).

UPDATE: - back trying to make the driver's footwell sunroof drain work - Using a test of a half litre of hot soapy water poured at the sunroof.(Hot water is useful not only to clean with a detergent but also to feel how far the hot water travel in the drain pipe).

As a last resort I used a strong small pipe cleaner wire brush in the wheel arch pipe grommet and it felt in a poor state but with brushing inside the grommet it popped out and totally disappeared.

Without the grommet the sunroof drain pipe connector from DMGRS sticks out into the wheel arch by 5mm to 10mm so that on a test, water poured at the sunroof immediately gushes out into the wheel arch.

I now have all the sunroof drains working and wipers/electrics no longer start when the car is parked (since cleaning up the immobiliser socket/loom plug) but much needs tidying up.

UPDATE - Big Fail 6am and alarm sounds and i find wipers going and dash lit up.
This CDTi Conniosseur SE with only 86k miles now seems like a write off.

Slight drizzle so car body was wet but I had placed towels and cloths over all and all above the drivers footwell was very dry. The boot was dry except a line of rain water from the o/s boot hinge into the towel below. But not near electrics

I have taken the circuit board out of the immobiliser to carefully stand just the socket terminals in white vinegar to see if that cleans off some discolouring. I might try same with the plug on the loom.

I may try to visit a T4 (Testbook version 4.Computer Diagnostic System) as one just told me changing the corroded immobiliser contacts can work.

UPDATE: Initial Success by DIY - no cost fix - not had wipers/alarm/dash lighting up while parked in 2 weeks but will need a T4 garage where I post (plug and play style) for them to renew the pins on the immobiliser or a new immobiliser.

I used great care alternating between soaking the immobilser pins in white vinegar for 24 hours and then being "exceptionally careful" using a desk magnifying lamp and 120 grit sandpaper and small micro files to clean the pins - being very careful as the pins bend very easily indeed and then can snap off (the T4 garage told me).

I was careful not to get white vinegar near the circuit board.

Although now it works ok, I will need to send the immobiliser to a T4 garage as i am sure the immobiliser pins are weakened and not worth risking it.

I was told by T4 garage that the wiring loom socket connection is steel and stronger and so I sprayed and used a micro file meant for a guitar as here. The smallest wire looking tool here is actually a file
