He was a pushover as a colonel but played his part, I used to love mash some great characters hawk eye a favourite

Yep, he once said -

"I don't care about the money. I'm just interested in the perks. I'll do a series if I am picked up by a limo, work only until 4, and the show is shot in Hawaii."

Apparently a great natural comedian, and one of those few people in Hollywood (Roddy Mcdowell was another) of whom no-one had a bad word.

Also I enjoyed his crackly little cameo as Marshall Thibido in 'The Shootist', along with his great friend's, John Wayne and Richard Boone.
