MOT and reverse lights work when they feel like by Ed3

Ed3
I will need an MOT soon and with using the car very occasionally things can seize. The latest being the reversing lights only work sometimes. I read that for cars before 2009(?) reversing lights are not a part of the MOT?
Regards a fix I read to take the plug off at the n/s gearbox and test the wiring. Any tips on what to do is the wiring is ok? Could a clean of the sender unit be the issue?

If it's a manual gearbox, the switches fail. Easy change. Can't comment on the MOT status though.

Thanks Duncan. I just ordered a switch for £6.67p delivered

In case others are interested this is one of the posts on the web about reversing lights and MOT but I would be uneasy to rely on this and prefer to show the tester that car is looked after etc:-
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/mot-inspect ... tion-4-6-1

4.6.1. Condition and operation
You must inspect all reversing lamps fitted to vehicles first used from 1 September 2009 other than quadricycles and three-wheeled vehicles.

sometimes a spot of solder on the ball on the switch works, when you get the new switch plug that into the connection and press the ball and then see how it works.

Thanks Steve. I have now read how the part on the car wears and so the solder is to build up the difference. Are there any tips on how much solder to put on the new clean part when it arrives in the post?

The solder is only for a worn switch not a new one.

With the plug off the reverse light switch on the gearbox I did the paper clip test and the lights worked
When I took the old switch out it was exactly the same length as the new. But to my surprise my reverse lights now work with just fitting a new universal ebay part for £6.67p delivered. I also bought these machine mart box tube spanners for £10.79p https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/clarke- ... box-spann/ which as well as the 19mm spanner size there is a 20mm that is better on a universal part that I found from some angles is not always exactly 19mm. Thank you for the help on this one.
