I rebuilt my rear suspension and now it makes noises.. by TBennet

Hi there,

The upper arms on my rear suspension rusted through on my ZT-T 190 so I dismantled everything and reassembled with new parts. Now the car rumbles and makes metallic noises when I drive...

...what have I done to it? :-|

Everything came off, including the subframe which was shot blasted and repainted.
I bought new upper and lower arms from DMGRS and a new anti-roll bar.
Everything was put back together exactly as it was, and torqued properly according to the values given in Haynes. It was a big job.... Only difference I can think of is that the captive nuts on the subframe broke off (very rusty and could not be avoided) and were replaced with normal nuts.

I appreciate no one will be able to diagnose the issue from a vague description of a noise, but I'm hoping to be told this is normal and everything is just finding its place and bedding back in or something... I have a full time job and a two year old and sadly there's no way I can dismantle it all again.

Any thoughts or experiences welcome.

Thanks

I had a garage do mine and so I have only read up on some issues. I don't know if relevant but the Norwiegan Youtube says of don't torque the bolts until the weight of the car is on the parts or the bushes are affected in some way.

At this moment I can't find the shorter youtube where he says this. Here is his longer youtube

I think you could be right. I didn't do that. Those bolts were done up on the workbench, and thread-locked also. Even if I thought it would be possible to do up those bolts in situ, with the car's weight on its wheels, it's not feasible for me to undo the work back to that level, so unfortunately I think I've ruined the car.

I got a back street garage to get the car up high on garage ramps and do things very cheaply. Can you find someone?

There are still garages that specialise in the Rover 75 and they would possibly know what to do and how much it would cost?
