FUSES - engine compartment KV6 2004 by Lida (Page 1 of 2)

Lida
I note that the site has had an upgrade, but my details must hv been dumped. So had to re-register.

1. No 3 fuse 15A keeps blowing. The list says it serves sensors for camshaft and oxygen, though AA man said something different. He suspects a rat (he saw a few droppings). When I put in a new fuse, car turns over well and runs - but fuse sooner or later fails again. So I'm not driving.

2. I have tried 6 mobile auto electricians, and none sound 'with it'. Again, I am back to the problem of having no one familiar with the 75. All the good guys seem to be in the Midlands.

Anyone know someone with links to an auto electrician down south?

I've come across this before. The feed to the cam sensor is shared with the O2 sensors, yes. On the ones I've come across, it was the sensor in the rear bank downpipe. The wire rubs through, and when the engine moves the power feed shorts and pops the fuse. You don't notice because the cam sensor is only needed for starting. But next time you try to start it wan't and you find the popped fuse. Doesn't happen when not moving as the engine doesn't move about enough. So double check the wiring to each of the O2 sensors.

Registered here 13 years ago and has never visited since. Probably best to look him up elsewhere. :gmc:

I am 5 miles from Heathrow airport, so a reading man would be great. I've looked on FB but I would need his other name. It's a clear run down the M4.

I think Duncan as it it on the head, i had to do my wiring before on the MGZT 190 i had back in 2012 it's one of those things you never forget and can pass on if anyone as the same problem, did do another one for a local chap sometime in 2014.

What a superb looking car, ARCTIC.
Yes, Duncan's description of the problem is very accurate. She tries to turn over but cannot, but when I replace fuse she jumps into life.
If the eroded wire is not in the usual location - rear downpipe - where else could it be?

I did email Andy Shiner yesterday thru the forum, but as he's not posted anything for years since registering it is doubtful he will see my email.

It could be the front sensor, and as you have a later car could be the third sensor, after the catalyst underneath the car.

I'm not aware of any forum where Andy is active on a regular basis, his name tends to appear by way of a query or a recommendation in my experience. Shiner is his forum username, his real name is Andy Squire and he is very active in helping Rover owners outwith the forums. I believe he is located at Beech Hill which is near Reading and he was, and might still be, working at Beech Hill Garage as the resident Rover expert. He will almost certainly be contactable via the garage which does have an online presence and contact details but that may likely result in the garage having to be engaged for his service. He may do jobs outwith the garage in his own time so I would explore this route first if time permits.

Thank you everyone. I too emailed Beech Hill Garage. Andy is on holiday, but I got an email back from Dan.Huchens who said someone would be in touch with me next week.

Should I be looking for an auto electrician, rather than a mechanic? Car electricians are very thin on the ground. I did spot two fabulous websites for mobile auto electrician and mechanic, but when I checked out the postal code one is in Oldham, the other also at that end of the country.

Personally, my preference would be to stick to a fellow enthusiast who has a track record of competence within the Rover/MG community. The potential cause of the problem as outlined above won't require the expense of a skilled pro to spot, though I accept that it will require the ability to be able to get underneath the car which can be a problem at times. What if it's not the problem? Presenting that situation to an unknown entity such as a garage or any unknown pro could leave you having to provide a blank cheque with no certainty of satisfaction afterwards.

My mention of Beech Hill Garage was not a recommendation for it, I have no experience of it. I mentioned it as an avenue to explore for contacting Shiner if other avenues failed. :gmc:

You wont find better than Shiner, the likes of Trikey and Marina Brian are close working friends of him and have both entrusted cars to him to sort. I feel Duncan is bang on the money with his diagnosis.

ARCTIC, TAKESTOCK et al.
These are Andy's projected charges for coming to me for the O2 sensor, assuming it is just that.

We charge £100.40 including vat per hour that includes travelling time, with an additional £0.55p per mile for fuel.

1 hour estimated time travelling to Hounslow £100.40 plus £19.36 for fuel
1 hour estimated time to fit 02 sensor £100.40
1 hour estimated time travelling back £100.40 plus £19.36 for fuel

Giving an estimated total of £339.92

Waddaya think!?

No, I would not entertain that option. I presume that was from the garage and not direct from Andy outwith the garage? If the car is running is it not possible for it to be driven further afield? Nano meets are regularly held in the West Midlands where enthusiasts give their time for free to help owners, if that is an option then maybe Arctic or Duncan could better advise.

If only, Willy. But the fuse could blow any time - cannot risk such a long journey.

Dan at the garage is handling all work for Andy it seems. He wants over £200 for travel time, and £100+ for the work. All of that will have VAT added too. Talk about price gouging.
