An hour after this was taken they were standing on the edge of the nest and spreading their wings. Two hours after they had flown.

A little story behind this photo: a week last Saturday I decided to remove a couple of branches from a horrible, straggly and thorny berberis. Had to pull branches hard to remove from the thicket. Only when I was throwing same on a bonfire heap did I notice the exquisite cup shaped nest of lichen and cobwebs - and the baby birds.

Should have known better and very cross with myself. Anyway, trimmed the branch carefully and left a foot long vertical stem which, standing on a ladder, I plunged into the top of the berberis (more in hope than expectation) where it held firm.

The birds were too small to make any audible sound but within 4 minutes the mother was back feeding them. The photo was taken a week later just before they fledged.
