My battery light came on and stayed on and so I will take my alternator off. With little room I am looking carefully at each bolt first. I will take off the steering pump and nearby top engine mount. But what about the rear bottom engine mount? Does that help stabilise when the top mount is taken off and the engine is jacked up high on the drives side? Or is it easier with the rear bottom mount taken off?
I do the alternator change from the bottom undo the compressor and set that aside it will rest on the sub frame once you bend back a little metal tang, then the alternator come off quite easy takes about an hour.
I am doing things a little at a time. Both belts are off and so is the steering pump pulley. The air con compressor's 3 bolts are out, so that it is hanging with pipes and wire connected. The alternator lead to the starter motor is disconnected at the starter.
The main next issues are the three bolts that secure the alternator. But do I first take off the alloy bracket/plate between the air con compressor and alternator? (Looks like 4 bolts from underneath)
When all goes back on, from which direction is the preferred way to use a 24mm spanner on the belt tensioner. In the wheel arch and straight up? Or downwards from above?
Yes the plate needs to be removed if you are doing it from below, to turn the tensioner i also do that from the wheel arch and use a small wedge of wood to stop the spanner coming off, i ground down a couple of ring spanners to fit into the tight gap.
