I found the explanation of locking the flywheel very clear and most helpful.

Would anyone know whether any shaft or pin of the correct diameter and length can be used if taking the crank pulley off?

I assume the locking pin tool is aimed at securely holding things in place for when working on the timing.

Ed this is only for changing the timing chain, which on the M47 diesels is very rare indeed, if the chain needs changing then something has gone really wrong.

To remove the crank pulley there is a special tool which i doubt many would have, the tool is very costly for the genuine tool.

Some people just use a gun but i have seen things go wrong like chain jumps out of timing, so always best to use the proper tool.

Small after market holding to can be bought off ebay which do work.
