One of the games I used to play doesn't work very well in Windows 7.

Is there a way I can create a windows 98 or windows XP environment within my Windows 7 just to run this game please?

I even thought of buying an old lappy or desktop and running windows 98 and the game from there but switching it to my main monitor somehow.

Windows 7 does support a virtual machine. However I seem to remember this is only for Pro rather than home versions. There are probably other virtual machine solutions.

Have you looked on GOG.com? Instead of buying a machine you can buy old games ready to run on updated PC's. I bought Dungeon Keeper and love it

Thanks Duncan but it doesn't seem to work on my PC :(

Thanks David. Unfortunately, the games I want are not on GOG.com

Planning is an unnatural process, much better to just get on with things, that way failure comes as a complete surprise instead of being preceeded by a period of worry and doubt

Paul, there are a few options you could try.

1. You can run the game in compatibility mode. A right click onto the shortcut, then Properties and then Compatibility. Try different settings.

2. Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate do have an XP mode, but not the Home edition.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... -windows-7

3. If you still have a license for XP, you can install it as a virtual machine using VirtualBox.

You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Jürgen, this is the error message I got when trying to run a virtual machine. Does it mean anything to you please?

"Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Games.

The virtual machine 'Games' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1.

Paul, I have to admit that I haven't seen this type of error (yet). But one possible reason could be that you need to install an extension pack.
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/serve ... ml#extpack

I guess you're using Windows 7 with service pack 1 and VirtualBox 4.3.14. What's the anti-virus software on your PC? That could be the culprit, too.

Jürgen, I installed the extension and get the same error.

I use Kaspersky.

Let's try disabling Kaspersky just for the start of the VM. (Don't forget to switch it on afterwards. ;)) Later on I'll have another look at this issue again.

I tried re-downloading the app and re-installing. Nothing changed.

I was wondering Jürgen, on their download page they specify windows x86 or amd64

Might that be a problem when using it on an Intel based 64bit PC?

No, AMD64 is also used as a generic description for the 64 bit PC processor architecture.

Paul, maybe there's a better solution for your problem. It's the VMware player, which is free for personal use.

Thanks Jürgen

I downloaded VMWare player last night and can create a Windows XP VM but cannot work out how to create a Windows 98 VM as the CD is not bootable.

Yes, indeed. Windows 98 came with a 3.5" floppy disk to boot and start the installation from CD. :panic:

But Windows XP should be sufficient to run the game. Or is it that old? Than you could buy one of these, connect it to your VM and give it a try.

It is a game called Diablo / Hellfire Jürgen. Apparently there are ISO images of Windows 98 avaiable which don't need a boot floppy to work with virtual machines :)
