I am coming across some in a panic about older (7 years or more) car tax increases in April 2026. But I thought our older car tax was staying roughly the same. My CDTi is 163 on emissions and £265

Hi Edward.
I think it's the petrol V6 that are going to be around £750 but don't quote me on it.

Thanks Steve. I hear lots of chat about big increases but can't find any official source to confirm it is happening.

It looks like all is speculation regards what Rachel Reeves may announce on 3 March. I found this:-
"Motorists across the United Kingdom are bracing for a fresh wave of changes to car taxation and motoring regulations as Chancellor Rachel Reeves prepares to deliver the 2026 Spring Statement on March 3."

Well that seems to be a US based news site (and maybe just AI bot generated). Bearing in mind that even most UK 'newspapers' are now mired in just saying things people want to click, I wouldn't give it a moments thought. Just to give you an absolutely non political example, how many times have you seen the headline 'the exact date that the UK wil be hit by a 600 mile wall of snow' over the last few years, and actually weeks. And it's all of them. And they are never right, and never get called out on it.

No matter what your political leanings, and we shouldn't get involved in that here, be very careful of believing stuff you read anywhere as it's now a sport.

Last year VED on V6 was £430 it usually goes up by £20.00 every year, If the thieving bint wants more than £450 It will be another huge iron spike in the coffin of the current political incumbent.

As an aside, My V6 came of age in November last year. I took delivery on the 4th November 2004

I found this the other day, after my brother contacted me in a panic, as he’d read some scare story on Facebook.

https://www.regit.cars/car-news/uk-road ... r-affected

It looks like my 2.0 diesel Skoda is staying at £35 again.

Thanks for the more informed discussion. People I know are also panicked by Facebook and main news papers making false comments of most excessive rises in VED for cars before 2017.

No matter what the cost it's never used to make the roads better anyway, so unless it's going to be used for that solely i think they should not charge the motorists

Quite right Steve, it goes into the general taxation pot and pretty much always has done apart from maybe the first few years it was implemented. And, we all know where a great deal of the general taxation pot is spent. Not on "pot holes" Pardon the pun. :)

From Wikipedia

"A vehicle tax was first introduced in Britain in 1888. In 1920, an excise duty was introduced that specifically applied to motor vehicles; initially it was hypothecated (ring-fenced or earmarked) for road construction and paid directly into a special Road Fund. After 1937, this reservation of vehicle revenue for roads was ended, and instead the revenue was paid into the Consolidated Fund – the general pot of money held by government. Since then, maintenance of the UK road network has been funded out of general taxation, of which VED is a part.[4]"

pre 2001 still goes on engine size
2001 to 2006 rates for the V6 are still as per the asterisk in band K here ;)
"*Includes cars with a CO2 figure over 225g/km but were registered before 23 March 2006."

Welcome to all who have managed to migrate ;)

Thanks Dave
Mine, thankfully is in the K* band, even though it is 259 g/km hopefully as i said earlier VED will just increase by the usual £20.00. In April.

I still haven’t been able to find anything definitive. I’m wondering if it’s anything to do with the Band K exemption? Maybe they’re getting rid of it.

Just a guess, but I was watching a YouTube video from Scottish Car Clan. He was giving various examples of cars that would be costing £760 to tax, but it still wasn’t clear why.
