Trying out some available light photography by podge

We were up in London at the weekend,so I took the camera and had a go at high iso photography, all hand held. These are compressed preveiw jpegs, the originals have finer detail.Just thought I would post up something different for a change!

Very nice there! It takes a steady hand to shoot hand-held like that, I'm impressed :) Some of my night time shots required me to prop the camera up somewhere - I was never really any good at keeping my hands steady long enough.

Hi Jürgen,
the camera along with the 75 is my little bit of luxury! After years of 35mm with my trusty Nikon FM2n,I bit the bullet and purchased a Nikon D700 awhile ago.The reason I chose that is it has a full frame sensor,so I can still use my lovely old Nikkor lenses, though these were shot with a modern beast. The camera has outstanding low light capabillity though, these were at 1600 and 3200 asa,the interior shot of St.Pauls looks really something in RAW.I am looking forward to linking it to my telescope for some astro shots, when the weather clears.I will post up a few more soon.Regards
Peter.

Hi Peter,
this Nikon looks like a really nice toy indeed (I had a quick look at the technical data). :) Most cameras show lots of noise, when pushing the ISO settings to the limits. But your pictures look still great. A full frame sensor pays off at these conditions.
Some time ago I treated myself to a Canon 400D. I wish I had more time to spend with it.
Regards
Jürgen

Yes indeed Jürgen,a superb camera,I had always been a dyed in the wood 35mm film man but had to concede to the wonders of digital. The main reason I bought one amongst other things is that I can use it exactly as my old Fm2 and retain full control,no auto functions to drive you up the wall!I just hope it proves as bomb proof as the old manual one(still used),the only downfall is the problem of dust on the sensor but as long as you are careful its not an issue.Regards
Peter

I particularly liked the one of St Pauls with two other iconic London symbols in the foreground, a red bus and a black cab.

It is nice to see you testing the Nikon's abilities and having fun with the ASA settings Peter. I hope we will be seeing some more being posted up.
