Due to circumstances beyond our control the forum was not available for several hours.

A DDOS attack on the domain name servers.

That explains it.

I was feeling sad and lonely.

Apparently, so I'm told, that's because I'm sad and lonely........

It'll be because the DNS servers were affected. Beyond our control as it wasn't the servers the forum is located on but the servers that hold records of where everything is in the world of internet.

Best option is to empty his cache and maybe (if he knows what he's doing) is to try using another DNS server to resolve the name, such as Google's DNS servers 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. See here for more details http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using.html

Back on now.

Followed instructions but apart from wiping out all my passwords etc. didn't solve the problem.

Seems to have returned by itself :)

Yes we're aware of a major problem still with the Domain Name Servers :(

They are still under a DOS attack and as such it is affecting a lot of traffic worldwide, not just to our website but many thousands (if not more) of others who rely on this one DNS provider. Our resident IT guru is working on one aspect of a solution and in the meantime we can only assume the people at the DNS are working equally as hard stopping the attack and restoring normal service.

I have only managed to get back on thanks Dave's knowledge of Unix systems.
To get around the dns lookup I have added this sites ip and url to /private/etc/hosts then run a flush cache command
DNSexit name servers are still fubarred at present preventing some members logging in

dscacheutil -flushcache if you are using OSX.

I guess that isn't much use posted here if people can't get on!

Looks like DNS servers are pretty much back on track. Some regions may still be having difficulty.
