The mileage is stored in a number of places. The two most important are the IPK (Instrument pack (IPK from the German)) itself, and the light switch (I know, sounds weird right?) If the IPK has been changed and disagrees with the light switch, then your trip computer would show Err instead of trip mileage. If it doesn then there are two possibilities: The IPK and light switch were both changed, or the MOT station made a mistake on the previous test.

I've experienced the latter.

I can get a photo of the chip, but give me a few days. It's an 8 pin SMD device. Needs a bit of dissasembly to see it in the IPK, but I have a few loose in a box.
