Any recommendations for a particular brand of engine oil?

I believe MGR recommended Mobil but that was 20 odd years ago.

Any 10w.-40 semi synthetic is the way to go. Manufacturer of choice? You choose. Castrol was, AFAICT, the manufacturer of oil distributed by MGR or Xpart under their own labels. I'm sure you already know all this Mike. :)

Info for those that don't

DMGRS do a kit, oil and filter at very reasonable price. 5ltrs oil is not quite enough, from dry it uses 6 ltrs. A change with new filter it should be around 5.2-5.3ltrs.

Don't forget your sump plug washer. :)

I have used Smith & Allan for ATF but when I entered my reg into their search for engine oil I got the following message:
We do not currently have any Engine [BMW M47R] recommendations available to purchase online, please call the team on 01325 462228 for further assistance.

All sorted now I ordered 5 litres as per the link.

(I already have a replacement sump plug and washer).

Quite agree with you Mick. I've only ever had one diesel car and that was a company owned one. Managed to swap it for a Rover 600 petrol. It did help that I was a director of the company at the time over 30 years ago. Swore that I'd never have another one.
