I need to replace the outer CV joint gaiters on the little Rover, but don't really want to remove the drive shafts. I was considering using a cone tool for stretching the boot over the joint, but then I came across a CV joint puller and wondered if anyone had used one.

It looks interesting and not a lot of cash.

What do you all think?

Tried using one it was a nightmare would not fit round CV joint it's in the shed somewhere deep at the back in disgust.

What did you do, did you remove the driveshaft, or did you manage to remove the CV joint another way?

It was on the Freelander2 and removed the drive shaft in the end, and put boot on on the work bench, i did try one of those stretch boots with a funnel that was a nightmare too, cable tie holds the circlip in while pushing the knuckle back on, then cut it off after.

I’m a big fan of VW Group driveshafts, as they have a bolted flange at the gearbox end. It’s possible to remove the shafts, on some models at least, without splitting any ball joints.

Well I decided to give the puller a try and I’m glad to say, it was very successful.

I did struggle with the ball joint on the bottom arm - for several hours - before finally deciding to remove the bolt from the inboard end of the bottom arm instead.

Once I’d installed the puller, I put a socket on the driveshaft nut and simply turned it with my hand. It popped straight off. That was the easiest part of the whole job.

£5.99 well spent.

Maybe the Freelander driveshafts are a bit big for it, Steve?
