5G Broadband by daveo138

Our broadband contract is coming to an end, so I'm looking at options. One of them being 5G.

Is anyone currently using 5G?

ATM we only have part-fibre, so speeds aren't brilliant. The best we can get is 20Mb/s download and <1Mb/s upload.

Obviously 5G doesn't come with a landline, although we don't use the landline 'phone much at all, only for the odd incoming call, or occasionally to call an 0800 number, if I can't be bothered to use my mobile.

If anyone has experience of 5G broadband, I would be interested to hear it.

I'm not using 5G so don't have experience. However my phone uses 5G, and it can be flaky. Even with decent signal, it sometimes take ages to load if the 5G newtork is busy. And you'll need to check you have decent 5G coverage, don't rely on coverage maps.

I'm surprised you can only get 20Mb download on part fibre (FTTC) connection. We have FTTC too but get 75Mb download.

Also do have a look to see if full fibre is coming your way soon. Search openreach fibre checker.

Thanks Duncan.

I’ve checked Openreach and it doesn’t look very promising.

They claim some amazing figures for part-fibre, but we’ve never got anywhere near there, no matter which ISP we’ve used.

I think the whole village has full fibre, up to about 200 yards away, then there’s a gap to where we are, together with another six houses.

I wonder if you have a problem with noise? Do you have any extension phone sockets in the house? If so do you use them?

Also worth checking what you are paying for as some ISPs charge more to get up to the theoretical 76M. If you are paying for 76M but getting a lot less, you should complain to your ISP.

Whenever I've looked at comparison sites for broadband, they only ever say that we will get up to c20Mb/s when I enter our postcode.

Hi Steve
No, we’re with Vodafone. Have previously been with Plusnet and also EE.
The best we’ve ever achieved is 20Mb.

What do SKY say have you looked and seen what they offer for your area?

I did look at Sky, but the price was not that competitive and customer reviews weren’t too good. Also, they apparently have several price increases each year.

I’ve taken the plunge and gone for Vodafone 5G. Speed is supposed to be up to 150Mb/s, which is more than 7 times what we can get with part-fibre. Price is £19/month, which increases by £3.50 next April and the same the following April.

There’s a 14 day cancellation period, so if it’s no good, I can send it back.

Edit: Also, Sky couldn't offer us any more in terms of speed, as we're still restricted by copper cable from the cabinet.
