He probably took the view that it was an opportunity to showcase yet another characterisation - one that would last.

Just heard that Bowie, on his own instructions, was cremated without family or friends being present, immediately after expiring. He wanted no memorial other than his music. "No fuss or palaver" he is reported to have said. His last, and unarguably individual, performance. Showman to and beyond the end. RIP.
