'One of the problems has been the shortage of coins that kept prices high as retailers often rounded them up and shoppers were given change in sweets or pens.'

I remember the coins thing happening in Italy many moons ago (70's?) when inflation was rampant. You'd fill up with fuel and the display on the pump, which was built/calibrated before things got out of hand, went off the scale, so they rounded the prices and let you help yourself to some cheap sweets!

(to be fair, the Zimbabwe thing looks to have got much, much more out of hand!)
