Hello everyone, I have just bought a rover 75 1.8t 2003 connie, my question is can you get an allternative inlet manifold for the 1.8t to cure the problems with plastic one's. roughyed.

The only issue I am aware of with the 1.8 inlet manifold is the possibility of the gasket failing. What are these problems you have heard of regarding problems with the inlet manifold?

I think it's the plastic throttle body that causes problems, not the manifold itself. I'm no expert, and thought the 75s all had the alloy throttle body, but was told otherwise.

Of curse on the V6, the manifold DOES cause the odd issue! (I was going to correct the spelling, but thought it mildly amusing to leave it as is!)

Having experienced IMG failure last year I believe it is possible to fit an MGF type which is alloy as opposed to the plastic ones fitted to the ZT. Here's one:

Again I believe elsewhere people have fitted them as a worthwhile upgrade as they don't flex/warp?

I don't believe the problem is with the manifolds. More the gaskets.

I know people have a real downer on plastic but there are many many cars out there with plastic manifolds and no problems!

I understand that the newer gaskets do go some way to solving the problem Duncan. When my HG failed 12 months previously I don't think the garage used the latest type of IMG; so it failed. Certain when it was replaced last year by a more reputable place they used the latest version. Perhaps its the T-piece scenario? Getting hot, cooling down, getting hot.... At least with an alloy one its another avenue blocked off of potential failures.

Asking a rhetorical SFK why was an alloy one not fitted to the ZT/75's originally? Tooling would have already in place so costs wouldn't have been that much of an issue surely?

Some owners have replaced the plastic manifold with the alloy version as the consensus seems to be that the alloy IM is less prone to leaks and more resilient to damage if an overheat occurs. I have had to scrap a heat damaged plastic IM which warped and crumbled in places after a HGF (Head Gasket Failure) and severe overheat, the crumbling was to the very thin walls which retain the gasket in place and what didn't crumble in that area was left brittle and fragile.
