eBay international transaction by raistlin

Hi,

I've just bought software / USB adaptor for my weather station from the US.

I was charged "import duty" and this seems to have been paid to Pitney-Bowes rather than the seller.

Does anybody have recent experience of buying on ebay from the USA please?

Does the "import duty" mean that I will not get any demands for payment when the item arrives in the UK?

Thanks.
Paul

Pitney-Bowes will probably pay it on your behalf if its been paid to them. They operate over here too selling franking machines and postage so I'd imagine postage was paid through them by the seller and they've subsequently collected the duty.

That seems to be the general view following a quick Google search David. I was wondering whether anybody had any experience :)

I've had none but know of Pitney Bowes when they use to cold call all the time. The general view for using them to pay for postage usually involved a barge pole! :-) Expensive was gist of things.

I bought some tape from the US a couple of weeks ago, no import duties or anything

Purchased another small item from the US yesterday again ia eBay, will report back if there are any import issues.

So far, it has cost me $35 and added five days to the delivery time. Beginning to look as if it's just another money-making scam for fleabay.

At least I can track it not moving though

Update:-

Still not left the USA :( eBay stung me an extra $40 odd for the "service".

Arrived today. In my view a cumbersome and costly procedure designed to make extra money for eBay and its associates.

Both my items were tax-free, but both under £16.
