Western Digital My Book Live HDD by raistlin

Hi all,

I have a WD 3TB My Book Live and I want to replace the HDD with a 4TB HDD.

Opening the case and physically swapping the drives is easy but I'm not sure about whether there is part or all of the MBL operating system on the original HDD and how I would make sure that the MBL sees the new HDD?

Any help greatly appreciated - thanks
Paul

No Richard. I had in mind replacing the 3TB WD with a 4TB Samsung that's lying around here gathering dust.

I tried to replace one in my WD elements play and it would only read a WD but the my book live may be different. What I have read is that you have to make a image from your original HDD and copy it onto a formatted HDD, BUT as it's a image it will render any storage space over 3TB useless as it will partition your 4TB to 3TB.

If you had a partition manager that could read linux EXT3 then you may be able to expand a partition to enable the full 4TB.

Thanks Richard.

Paragon Partition Manager recognises and formats EX2, EX3, etc.

Presumably, I have both drives in my PC, somehow copy the image on the 3TB drive, put it on the 4TB drive and expand it with PPM?

If so, how do I copy what is on the 3TB drive to the 4TB drive please?

I would use a programme like Acronis true image to take a image from the 3TB then restore that image onto the 4TB.

I have access to a PC with True Image 2013 on. Presumably, the required function in True Image would be "Clone Disk" Richard?

I'm hoping True Image will see the My Book Live disk properly from within a Windows environment.

I'd like to get all bases covered before I begin as getting the HDD out of the MBL is apparently a real pig of a job.

That's correct you want to make a clone of your 3TB. If you do a Google search for "Acronis true image 2013 instructions" download the pdf and go to 8.5 it gives detailed instructions to clone a HDD.
