You never know when you will have to use a train to pick up that new car:

I still love this marque and I will still be around, preferred selling to breaking, as a great runner and performer"

That description can be very misleading.
What they are saying is if you book 10/14 or 28 days in advance they can save you money on tickets over the standard open return ticket. Very True.
But some rail companies, Including Virgin, run their own sites with hard to beat prices, you can even get good deals in advance from your local ticket office.
If you buy a ticket on the day, basically you are stuffed and charged the maximum rate.
