I had a 10 year old Volvo S40 in today for scratch repairs and a "complete walk round. It came up so well I had to take some pics.

I started at 9am and had the job finished at 5pm.

Work done was:

Clean wheels with bilberry wheel cleaner.
Wash vehicle using 2 bucket method
Towel dry vehicle
Perform Sprayless Scratch Repairs to Front & rear bumpers, N/S/F Wing, N/S Front & rear doors, N/S Rear wing, O/S/F Door and Bonnet
Wash Vehicle again.
Hand Polish vehicle.
Apply 2 coats of SSR Super Glaze Sealant (Diamond Brite)
Polish Wheels
Apply Dressing to tyres & unpainted exterior plastics
Clean and valet interior.

Well pleased with the result - I think it was the colour that made it look so good when I'd finished :D :D

Why thank you chaps.

The owner was so pleased that she's thinking of keeping the car. Can you believe it's only done 25k in 10 years.

Thanks Carl,

I use a patented system for sprayless scratch repairs but it's specifically designed as a low-cost alternative to bodyshop or more conventional sprayed SMART repairs.

I do SSR work from £35. That compares with my local Halfords who charge from £65, and I come to you (if you live in the Helensburgh / Lomond area).

As far as DIY goes, if you feel confident enough, good results can be achieved with a touch-up stick, fine artist's paintbrush and 3000 grit wet n' dry. Oh, and a lot of patience. The important thing to remember is that there's no magic bullet once the paint's scratched and certain colours respond better than others, even to professional repairs.

Here you go James, I had to crop them from larger pics but as I'm using a 10.2mp camera the res is still OK. If you'd like to see other close-up examples I have them, just not of this car.

The 2 nasty chips in the pics above were on the O/S door just under the mirror:

The hairline scratches were on the N/S/F wing just behind the indicator:
