I agree a right royal pain as the power required to lift and close will vary with temperature and voltage. Needs to be able to detect if something is in the way and back off too. Also have to have some kind of method of disengaging the drive system so if it stops for whatevere reason you can still open or close the boot. Those cars that have the feature usually have an ECU just for the servo boot system.
But even harder than all that is getting the drive from whatever mecahnism inside the boot, to the boot lid itself. Normally done through the hinges, but then you need to modify the hinges, and provide a driveshaft that comes through the metalwork, without letting water into the boot and mechanism.
An alternative method is hydraulic. But still a horrible thing to try to do.
