Auto Gearbox probs on Diesel 75 by rovernut

A friend has askedme for advice re her beloved Rover.

The autobox revs up to 4k when about to change from 3rd to fourth. Her service garage says this quite common and referred her to a spcialist. He quotes £1100 plus fitting!

Any suggestions? Should she sell and get a new er £8-10 grand car or repair?

She is getting on a bit but loves the car.

First question: when was the fluid last changed? Doesn't fix everything but always worth a shot first.

There was a problem I've seen reported on some forums with earlier boxes, that a piston could crack, and I would guess it could give this symptom, but it's only a guess, I'm no autobox expert.

In terms of fix or get rid: depends very much on the condition of the rest of the car. Fixing the box might be the last money she spends in a while, or the first of a list. Get the car thoroughly assesed by someone who knows them, if I were you.

Fluid replacement would be the first port of call if the gear changes have become jerky rather than the the smooth as silk we are used to. This may not resolve the symptoms you describe. The usual fault is the torque converter cracks leading to fluid leaking into reverse gear, this would stop the car dead not the high revving, parts are available to do repairs as this box is used in Jags, VW, Ford Galaxy, and many more.
The recommended specialists are http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/ or
Carvers Transmissions Ltd
Unit 2, Turner Street
Denton
Manchester
M34 3EG(Road Map)
Lancashire
Tel: 0161 320 3400
Fax: 0161 3203433
Ask for Chris he owns the place
both can supply reconditioned units or can repair your current box.

If she is happy with the general condition of the car then a repair is far the better option than taking a risk with another used vehicle which could have any amount of problems waiting to surface.

Carvers in Denton... Hmmm... Judging by the phone calls and conversations I overheard whilst in their office waiting for my cars gearbox oil to be changed, I would not recommend them, and I wont be going there again either.. You have been warned...

Thanks James, always good to hear personal experiences. The info I have regarding this is around 6 years old, they may have been very good at the time.

From what I have read this is either a failed solenoid of more likely a cracked piston. both are DIY do able, the piston seems to be around £80 if I remember and around three hours work. These is a thread on it next door :)

Thanks for the quick responses chaps.

Mileage is 74k and fluid change has not been recorded so that's a pointer.

Cracked piston keeps coming up as the suggested problem as you say Dave. Can it really be replaced without box removal?

She has just had another £1100+vat quote from Horners of Swinton and will probably go down that route.

Thanks Dave for the amazing links to sorting the cracked piston. It sounds like this could be done by a younger man than me!

I'm very tempted  Do you fancy a challenge!
