Age of tyres by PaulT

Am I right that somewhere there is a code stating when tyres were made?

If so what is it and how do you decipher it?

There's a DOT label on each tyre. Four digits at the end indicate the week of production. This label is located on just one side, so maybe it's not easily visible on both sides of the car.

DOT ... 2210 = 22nd week of 2010

It's like that since 2000. Until 1999 it has been a three digit code (DOT ... 229 = 22nd week of 1999 or even 1989).

Thanks for that. The tyres are off the car. They are from a fixed head Triumph TR7 that I bought for parts especially the alloys (standard equipment on fixed head and optional on dropheads, and my drophead has standard steel wheels). All 5 tyes have bags of tread albeit 2 of one pattern 2 of another and one on its own.

Wanted to check how old to enable me to decide whether they are usable or not.

One pair of tyres has '8EFM' after the 'DOT'! - as the others are 1999 that is the cue to take the tyres off of the rims and get rid of them.

1999? Yes, Paul they're definitely worth to get rid of.

Then the date code should be on the other side.
